FAQ

We know that taking the first step toward mental health care can feel overwhelming. Below you’ll find answers to the questions we hear most often. If you don’t see what you’re looking for, your Care Navigator is always happy to help.

General Questions

What conditions do you treat?

We treat a wide range of psychiatric and psychological conditions, including ADHD, anxiety, autism spectrum disorder, bipolar disorder, depression, eating disorders, OCD, schizophrenia, trauma and PTSD, and life changes such as divorce, loss, or job transitions. If you’re not sure whether we can help with your specific concern, just reach out — we’re happy to talk it through.

We have specialists available to treat children (ages 5 and up), adolescents, adults, and seniors. Whether it’s a child struggling in school, an adult navigating a life change, or a senior whose mental health is affecting the whole family — we meet you where you are.

Yes. As experts in our field, we are able to prescribe and manage medication when appropriate. Medication is just one tool we may use as part of your overall treatment plan — we’ll always discuss the options with you so you can make an informed decision.

Our focus is on psychiatric evaluation, diagnosis, and medication management. While our appointments are longer and involve deep listening, we are not a therapy or counseling practice. That said, we work collaboratively with your therapist or counselor to ensure your care is coordinated and comprehensive.

That’s completely okay — and more common than you’d think. You don’t need a diagnosis or a referral to reach out. Speak to your Care Navigator, and we’ll help you figure out the right next step. No judgment, no pressure.

Yes. We offer screening questionnaires for conditions like ADHD, anxiety, autism spectrum, depression, eating disorders, OCD, and more. These quick assessments can help you understand your symptoms and take the first step toward getting the care you need.

Clinical Questions

What is Ascent Psychiatry?

Ascent Psychiatry is a virtual, concierge psychiatry practice designed around you. We provide personalized, accessible, and compassionate mental health care from the comfort of your home. Our physicians are experts, our appointments are longer, and your Care Navigator ensures every step of the process is seamless.

Concierge means we put your needs above all else. No more long waits — we’ll get you an appointment within days. No more difficult doctors — we provide longer appointments, listen deeply, and create a care plan personalized for you. No more confusing instructions — your Care Navigator will make sure you have everything you need. At Ascent Psychiatry, your experience matters just as much as your treatment.

Yusuf Modan, M.D. is the Chief Medical Officer of Ascent Psychiatry. Dr. Modan combines clinical expertise with a genuine commitment to patient-centered care. He believes that everyone deserves to be heard, understood, and treated with compassion. To learn more about Dr. Modan, visit our About Us page.

We call it the Ascent Difference. It comes down to five things: accessible care (appointments within a week, phone calls returned within 24 hours), compassion (longer appointments with no rush), world-class physicians (trained at top institutions, practicing cutting-edge medicine), a collaborative approach (we work with your therapist, primary doctor, and loved ones), and empowerment (we deliver hope, healing, and health in a stigma-free environment).

Your Care Navigator is your personal point of contact at Ascent Psychiatry. They help you understand your options, coordinate your scheduling, handle logistics from testing to follow-up, and make sure you have everything you need at every step. Think of them as your guide through the entire care process.

Ascent Psychiatry is a fully virtual practice — all appointments take place online. Currently, we can see patients located in Pennsylvania. We are expanding quickly, so if you live outside PA, check back again soon!

Appointments & Scheduling

How soon can I get an appointment?

Your first appointment can be within a week, sometimes within days. We know that when you’re ready to seek help, waiting months isn’t acceptable. Reach out to your Care Navigator to get started.

All of our appointments take place over secure, HIPAA-compliant video. You can meet with your psychiatrist from the comfort of your home, your office, or wherever you feel most at ease. All you need is a phone, tablet, or computer with an internet connection.

Your first visit will be a longer, comprehensive evaluation where we take the time to understand you — your history, your concerns, and your goals. There’s no rush. We’ll work together to build a treatment plan that feels right for you.

Our appointments are longer than what you may be used to at other practices. We believe that good care takes time, and we never rush. Your initial evaluation is comprehensive, and follow-up visits are designed to give you the space to be heard.

We understand that life happens. Please contact your Care Navigator as soon as possible if you need to cancel or reschedule. For full details on our cancellation and rescheduling terms, please visit our Policy page on our website.

We strive to be accessible when you need us. Please speak with your Care Navigator about available appointment times, and we’ll do our best to accommodate your schedule.

Insurance & Billing

Do you accept insurance?

Ascent Psychiatry is a private-pay practice. This model allows us to spend more time with each patient, offer appointments within days instead of months, and provide a higher level of personalized care without the restrictions that insurance often imposes.

While we do not bill insurance directly for appointments, you can use your insurance to pay for medications and lab tests that may be part of your treatment plan. We can also provide you with a superbill — a detailed receipt that you may submit to your insurance company for possible out-of-network reimbursement. Many patients are able to recover a portion of their appointment costs this way.

A superbill is an itemized statement that includes diagnostic codes, procedure codes, and the information your insurance company needs to process an out-of-network claim. We provide these automatically so you can submit them at your convenience.

Insurance-based practices often mean long waits, short appointments, and limited treatment options. By operating as a private-pay practice, we can see you sooner, spend more time with you, and make clinical decisions based solely on what’s best for you — not what an insurance company approves.

For specific information about our fees, please speak with your Care Navigator. We are transparent about costs and will make sure you understand your investment before your first appointment.

Our patients consistently tell us it is. No insurance hassles, no long waits, no rushed appointments — just real, personalized care when you need it. Many of our patients say they actually look forward to their sessions for the first time. We invite you to experience the Ascent Difference for yourself.

Privacy & Safety

Is my information private and secure?

Absolutely. All of our virtual appointments are conducted over a secure, HIPAA-compliant platform. Your personal health information is protected with the same level of security you would expect from any healthcare provider, and we take your privacy very seriously.

No. Your care with us is confidential. We do not share your information with employers, schools, or anyone else without your explicit written consent, except where required by law.

If you or someone you know is in immediate danger, please call 911 or go to your nearest emergency room. You can also reach the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline by calling or texting 988. Ascent Psychiatry is not an emergency or crisis service, but we are here to support your ongoing mental health care.

Absolutely — with your permission. We believe in a collaborative approach. We’re happy to work with your therapist, primary care doctor, loved ones, or any other member of your care team to ensure everyone is aligned. For children and adolescents, we work closely with parents and guardians as part of the treatment process.

How do I get started?

Getting started is simple. Reach out to your Care Navigator by phone or through our website. We’ll help make sure we’re a good fit, answer any questions you have, and then book your first appointment. That’s it — no complicated intake process, no weeks of waiting.

No. You do not need a referral from another doctor to schedule an appointment with us. If you think you might benefit from psychiatric care, simply reach out and we’ll take it from there.

We hear this more often than you might expect, and we’re sorry you went through that. At Ascent Psychiatry, we do things differently. Our physicians listen deeply, never rush, and treat you as a whole person — not just a diagnosis. We invite you to experience the Ascent Difference and see how care should feel.

Yes, absolutely. You don’t need to be in crisis to deserve support. Many of our patients felt the same way before reaching out, and they’re glad they did. If something doesn’t feel right, that’s reason enough. We’re here for you.

Of course. Speak to your Care Navigator — they’re happy to answer your questions and help you decide if Ascent Psychiatry is the right fit. There’s no obligation and no pressure.
